How to Buy a Piano | ||
Shopping for a piano can be a confusing experience. Should you buy a new or used piano? Should you buy from a dealer, a piano technician, or a private party? How do you choose the right piano for you? How much should you pay? What maintenance will be necessary? In the Chicago area, you can shop at a variety of piano stores. (See the online Yellow Pages for a complete listing.) You will find new pianos in a full spectrum of quality, features and price.
Many of our local Guild members also have rebuilt or reconditioned pianos for sale.
Another big source for pianos in Chicagoland are the classified sections of our local newspapers. When buying a piano privately, always have it inspected first by a piano technician. Your technician can determine the overall quality of the piano, and whether the piano has any serious problems.
Undoubtedly the best first step in shopping for a piano is to purchase a copy of The Piano Book by our very own Larry Fine, RPT, Boston Chapter. This book is considered the most comprehensive guide for the consumer on buying a new or used piano. It reveals how pianos are made and how they work, and what you need to know when shopping for a piano.
